At this time of year, many people are starting to fall away from their New Year’s resolutions. We often see our Gyms in Hamilton get crowded for the first few weeks of the new year. Then attendance slowly wanes as people become disenchanted with their progress or distracted by other priorities. So how can you overcome these pitfalls?
Setting weekly, daily or monthly goals or having a solid action plan is a good start to helping you maintain your work out regime. Tracking your goals keeps you honest and aware of your success and progress. However, sometimes goals are just not enough.
Motivational Interviewing
Motivational interviewing is a common practice used by psychologists, good personal trainers and life coaches where you answer three important questions and then rank them zero to ten. (Zero being not confident to ten being totally confident).
Confidence: How confident are you that you can achieve this plan/goal?
Readiness: How ready are you to make this change?
Importance: How important is it to you to make this change?
Literature tells us that if you are not scoring each question above 7/10 for each question and for each goal or action, then you are probably not going to achieve it, thus the goal needs to change.
For example;
I will walk everyday for 30 mins before dinner.
If I score below 7/10 on any question, I may need to adjust the goal.
I will walk 3 times per week for 20 mins before dinner.
Adjusting parameters to be more realistic in timeline, duration, or frequency can help to build success into your program. Often goals are too lofty or advanced for our current fitness level or time availability. Starting out slowly and carving out smaller chunks of time will create more success long term.
